Tossa de Mar: Medieval Beach Destination with Children

When you think about Spain I’m sure you can imagine beautiful beaches and the sun shining everywhere. Although it is not always like that, one of the areas we like the most referring to stunning beaches is the Costa Brava in the North-East of Spain.

Tossa de Mar belongs to the Costa Brava and it’s a beautiful town surrounded by castle walls right by the sea. It’s about 90 km  from Barcelona, around one hour and 15 minutes drive, and you can get there by car or bus. Tossa is a great place to discover with kids as there are a lot of activities you can enjoy with them.

If you like medieval places, you’ll love Tossa de Mar. Its historical center is called Vila Vella (Old Town) and has the perfect atmosphere to walk through and feel like a night or princess in the old days. Moreover, it is full of handmade shops and good restaurants to taste the real Spanish cuisine.

Besides spending your day in one of the beautiful beaches in Tossa, like Platja d’es Codolar, Platja Gran or Platja Mar Menuda, which are accessible by walking from the center, there are other fun activities you can do with kids.

Here you’ll find my recommendations of Tossa with Children:

1 - Take a boat in Platja Gran: if you want to discover the amazing caves hidden in Tossa and its surroundings, buy a boat ticket  from a company called Fondo de Cristal. Kids will be fascinated by seeing the seabed through a glass bottom boat. You can also get off at Cala Giverola and spend some beach time there. The boat company works from April till October and prices go from 10 €  per child (from 6 to 12 years old) and 16€ per adult.

2- Have a picnic in Sa Riera: Only 500 meters from the center of Tossa you can find the beautiful park of Sa Riera. Bring your own meal and have a picnic with your family in the forest surrounded by evergreen oaks, cork oaks and pine trees. If you and your kids like hiking, there are many routes you can discover there.

3 – Take a ride on the ‘carrilet’: A good way of discovering Tossa is through the ‘carrilet’ or little train that goes all over the town. It’s not really expensive and you can see Tossa in 25 minutes, kids will love it!

4 - Visit the Lighthouse Museum: In the highest point of Vila Vella, you will find the Lighthouse Museum. It has a lovely terrace where you can enjoy the most amazing views of Tossa de Mar. If you’re a lighthouse lover, as we are, you can discover more about Tossa’s maritime heritage.

5 - Spend the afternoon in Gnomo Park: A fun themed park located in a forest near Tossa. This park has 40.000m2 of fun for all ages: kid’s areas, mini-golf, adventure circuits, aquatic games… It is opened from June to September included and their prices go from 7-15 € more or less.

6 - Enjoy a day at Water World: if your kids love aquatic parks this is your place. In Water World you can enjoy various rides, such as wave pools, rapid rivers, kamikaze…. Fun for everyone! Everyday a free bus goes from Tossa to Water World every 30 minutes from the bus terminal.  Prices go from 33€ for people more than 1,20 meters tall, till 19€ kids from 0,80 till 1,20 meters, smaller ones free. However, check out their website where you can always find some interesting discounts.

7 - Discover the Roman Villa of Ametllers: A good outdoor activity to do with your children and learn a bit about how Romans lived in the old times is visiting the Villa of Ametllers. It has free entrance and you can get easily by foot as it is placed in the center of Tossa.

As you can see there is lots of fun for the family in Tossa de Mar, we love this town so much we come every year. Have you been there? Share your experience with us!
