Madrid: 5 Places You Must Visit with Children

A good city holiday trip to Spain has to be visiting Madrid, the capital of Spain.  Madrid is a very well connected city and you can get to it  easily by air, train or bus. In Madrid you’ll find great parks, good food and really nice people, the perfect combination to enjoy your trip with your family.

Of course there are more than 5 places to visit in Madrid with children, but we have selected the ones that a family cannot miss when staying there.

1 – Walk through el Retiro Park: One of my favorite places for kids in Madrid is the Retiro Park. I recommend entering the park through the entrance near the Puerta de Alcalá (Alcalá Gate). Once you enter you’ll find a large pond where you can rent a boat and spend some nice time with your family, your children will love that! You can also take a walk through the park, see different street performers, visit the Crystal Palace (free entrance) or listen to the different concerts that play live music during the summer season. There’s a lot to do, choose the activity you want depending on your preferences and enjoy the day.

2 – Visit the ‘Puerta del Sol’ (Gate of the Sun):  In the main center of Madrid we find the Puerta del Sol, one of the most crowded places of the city. The square is important because there’s a clock that is broadcasted live all over Spain in New Year’s Eve. If you want to make your visit attractive to your kids, you can play with them to find the Km 0 (the sign where all Spanish roads begin), the Bear and the Madroño tree or the Tio Pepe neon advertisement. From the square you can walk around the streets, get lost, you’ll love it.

3 – Visit El Prado National Museum:  Sometimes when travelling with children you exclude visiting museums because it can be boring for them. This is not the case of el Prado that has two itineraries for children from 8 years old. They have a map with activities and stickers to make your visit really fun. Moreover, they offer audio guides for children too. Don’t miss the opportunity to show your children a bit of  Spanish art culture, I’m sure they’ll enjoy the time spent there.

4 – Take the Cable Car: A good  plan with children is going on a ride in the Cable Car of Madrid. I recommend taking the cable car in Casa de Campo (Country House), a beautiful park that you can visit before getting on it. The tour of the cable car finishes in the Parque del Oeste (West Park) another stunning park where you cannot miss visiting the Temple of Debod, an Egyptian Temple donated by the Egyptians to Spain. The Cable Car is a great opportunity to see the spectacular views of Madrid from one side to the other. It is open all year round  from 12pm till 20pm and the prices are 6€ adults and 4€ children from 4-12 years old, free for less than 4. Moreover, if you have a folding pushing chair you can also take it with you.

5 – Spend a day in the Warner Park: Why not spending a day in an amusement park? Your children  would really  love that and it can be a fun day for all the family. In the Parque Warner, you can be surrounded by the most famous characters of TV such as the Looney Tunes, Justice League Superheroes, Police Academy, Scooby-Doo… There are a lot of shows during the day and really good attractions for all ages, we highly recommend it if you come to Madrid for  more than 3-4 days.

Of course there are more places to visit with children in Madrid, but these are our selection, can you suggest any other one? We will be happy to hear!
