The south of Spain is very well known because of flamenco dancing and singing, bull fighting and good food but what makes it really special is the influence from the eight centuries when Muslims ruled the lands, that mixes the old and the new in the cities and that is still very present in many ways, historically and culturally and Córdoba is one of the perfect example of this.
We are going to give you a day tour of this fantastic city, and we will give you some ideas of how to make the most of your time there with your family and of course, how to make it fun for your children.
Our recommendation is that you try and mix this city stay with your beach holidays, for example in Málaga (more info in future post about holiday itineraries). Córdoba is only about 1:45hr, you can hire a car or even go by train. Stay for two days and one night, is more than enough to see the main sites.
Remember that we are talking about the south of Spain so prepare for a hot day in Summer: Wear light clothes, put suntan lotion on (yes, protection is very important when walking around a city too!) and carry plenty of water.
What to see in Córdoba:
1.- Visit the “Mezquita”: Probably the most famous site in the old city and definitely the most important one as it’s a World Heritage Site. Its main characteristic is that throughout the years, it was a Muslim and then Christian religious building and now is a mix of the two. You can access the patio for free, it’s really well known because is full of orange trees, it has fountains where kids can refresh themselves and play a bit with the water, it’s a beautiful place. And of course, you have to visit the inside too, adults pay about 10€ and children are free up to 10 years old, my opinion is it is totally worth it!
2.- The Roman bridge: after visiting the “Mezquita”, take a walk down to the Roman Bridge. Walking down you will find the horse carriages, if your children are like mine and like animals, they will love to see the horses. Walk along the bridge to the other side, it’s exciting for them and you will enjoy the views of the city from the other side.
3.- The Alcázar: As you come back from the other side of the bridge, walk to your left. Only a few metres from there you will find the Alcázar. You can visit the fort and the palace but what everyone really likes are the beautiful gardens. Everything is nicely placed, geometrically perfect and is full of lakes and fountains that makes it so relaxing. Very important for you to know, they close at 6pm so don’t delay the visit to this place. If you can’t get there on time, just leave it to the next day in the morning if you decide to do a two-day stay, you need to take your time especially when visiting with children.
5.- Dinner: A really good place to go for dinner when in Córdoba is La Plaza de la Corredera. It´s a really big square full of tapas bars. They all have the tables right in the middle of the square so you are dinning out but the really good thing about it is that there is no traffic there so your kids can run around or play in the square right next to your table so they don’t get too bored like when inside a restaurant and there is a really good atmosphere as is full of families that go there.
Córdoba is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, do not miss the chance to visit if you can!
