When you think about travelling with kids sometimes you can feel a bit overwhelmed. Moreover, if you think about taking a plane! We've flown with children many times, even when they were babies, so don't worry, we're going to give you some tips to make your flight with children more comfortable, or at least less stressful.
Tips for Flying with Children:
1 – It’s commonly known that children under 2 fly for free on your legs. But this is not exactly like this, they pay taxes, that sometimes is the same amount as a complete seat. Before buying a ticket, check the baby price and a normal seat, maybe paying a little more or even the same, will help you having a more comfortable flight.
2 – Before leaving home, check you have all documents needed: A good way to not starting your trip stressed out is knowing you have everything you need to fly. Check your belongings and make sure you have passports and medical cards for all family, even the little ones.
3 - Arrive early to the airport and use child security check when available: In many airports there’s a special security check for people travelling with children, normally for the ones who use pushchairs. People working there have more patience and the security check becomes easier.
4- Board before any other passenger: Some air companies have special early boarding for people flying with kids, take advantage of that! It’s less stressful if you board before any other passenger as you have the whole plane for you and you can put your family belongings on the hand-luggage compartment right above you.
6 – Bring games: When we fly each of our children bring his/her bagpack full of games. Our favorites are color books and crayons, playcard games, ipad with some cartoons and earphones, music, books… (our best family travel games to come)
Don’t forget his/her favorite cuddly toy, a good way of remembering home and maybe have a nap (if you’re lucky!). An extra tip is having two cuddly toys exactly the same, one for home and one for trips, in case the toy gets missed our kids won’t suffer the same sorrow.
7 – Bring some snacks and water: sometimes flights are really long, (or that seems to you as a parent!), children get hungry easily and a good way of distracting them is with food. Bring chips, sweets, maybe a little sandwich and of course water. Normally water is available when travelling with children, they tend to analyze it in the security check and that’s it.
8 – Prepare your hand-luggage with spare clothes for you and your children: Remember that kids, especially when they are babies, tend to throw up and this can have a bit of a disgusting smell. A good way of preventing this is having wet wipes and spare clothes with you.
