You’ve read in other posts that we recommend some places to visit as a break from your holidays (read Cordoba city break here). This is the case of Cuenca, a beautiful city where you can spend like one/two days as an extension of your visit to Madrid or Valencia, as it is only 2-2’30 hours far from these two main cities by car or train.
Cuenca belongs to the region of Castilla-La-Mancha in the middle of Spain and it’s surrounded by mountains and rivers, really a nature place. We go to a village in Cuenca every Summer as it is the province of my father’s birth place, so as you can imagine we totally recommend the city.
What to see in Cuenca:
1.- Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses): This is the most famous site of the town. It’s placed in the old city of Cuenca. Its particularity is that it is built over a rock above the River Huecar and their balconies are made of wood. Inside the Hanging Houses you can visit the Abstract Arts Museum stablished in 1966 with paintings of basically Spanish artists. To get a good view of the Houses you should cross St. Paul’s Bridge, also famous in the city, we recommend to do that, it’s totally worth it, and you’ll get the best beautiful pictures!
2.- Catedral de Cuenca (Cuenca’s Cathedral): It is also placed in the old city of Cuenca. Its famous because is the first gothic cathedral built in Spain and it resembles the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The Cathedral is dedicated to Mary and Saint Julian, the patron of Cuenca. Its interior is really worth a visit, don’t miss it!

3.- Ciudad Encantada (Haunted City): It’s about 30 minutes from Cuenca city by car. The Haunted City is a natural park of rocks that the weather and the water of the river Júcar have eroded creating different shapes. The visit is 3km round tour and it takes about 1’30h to complete. You can buy the tickets directly from there, costing 5€ per person. Unluckily, the route is not available to go with push-chair. Going to the Haunted City with your children is a good way of developing their imagination and having fun while enjoying nature.
4.- Nacimiento del Río Cuervo (Spring of the Cuervo River): The spring of the Cuervo River is about 1’20h from Cuenca, it’s quite far from it but it’s really worth to spend a day and maybe have a picnic there if you really are a nature like family. The spring is really an astonishing place where there are plenty of beautiful waterfalls and depending of the season you go, you can find more or less water on them. It’s a wonderful and relaxing place to enjoy with your children!
5.- Dinner: If you go to Cuenca, its food is one of the main things you cannot miss. We recommend that you go to a restaurant to taste the typical dishes of the region, like for example: ‘morteruelo’(I love it!), ‘ajoarriero’ or ‘zarajo’ and sweets such as ‘Alajú’. A gift to your senses!
